Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an audit or a review?

It depends on who's asking for your financial statements and why. A full audit provides the highest level of assurance — it's typically required by lenders, investors, grant providers, or regulators. A review offers limited assurance through analytical procedures and is often sufficient for internal stakeholders or smaller lending relationships. A compilation simply organizes your financials without any assurance. If you're unsure which level is right for your situation, DVF can help you determine what your stakeholders actually require before committing to a scope.

How long does a financial statement audit take?

Most audits for small to mid-sized businesses take four to eight weeks from fieldwork to final report, depending on the complexity of your financials, the completeness of your records, and how quickly information is exchanged. Organizations with more complex structures, multiple entities, or federal funding requirements may require additional time. Starting early — ideally before your fiscal year closes — helps keep the timeline on track and avoids end-of-year bottlenecks.

What's required for a Single Audit under Uniform Guidance?

A Single Audit is required for any organization — nonprofit, government entity, or institution of higher education — that expends $750,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year. It goes beyond a standard financial statement audit to include a review of your federal program compliance and internal controls over those programs. The audit must be performed by an independent CPA and submitted to the Federal Audit Clearinghouse within the required timeframe. DVF performs Single Audits in accordance with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and can help your organization stay on schedule and compliant.

Does DVF work with nonprofits or government entities?

Yes, nonprofits and government agencies make up a significant part of DVF's client base. For nonprofits, we provide financial statement audits, Single Audits, grant compliance support, and the reporting transparency your board and donors expect. For local and regional government entities, we offer audit and accounting services that meet public sector standards and reporting requirements. With more than 40 years serving Middle Tennessee organizations, our team understands the regulatory environment and stakeholder expectations unique to mission-driven and public sector work.
